Valkyria Chronicles worldbuilding: Making a VC!US and a VC!Japan

OP and Basic Assumptions

So, remembering a long string of posts in SB, I've decided to start working on the worldbuilding for a Valkyria Chronicles fic that has been in the back of my mind. Basically having Valkyria Chronicles!US, Valkyria Chronicles!Japan work with Gallia as an informal axis of nations. A third party to that world's geopolitics as it were. Sadly this idea came before the reveal of VC4...

The world 'map':

Assume that some of the oddities is due to the fact that whenever a people got badass enough to give the Valkyur a hard time, the Valkyur break out the terrain altering guns.

These are are some assumptions of the new (spotlight) nations overall:

  • Valkyria Chronicles US:
    • Prototype name: United States of Columbia
    • The USC is basically the United States with some caveats like not having a strong centralized army and forced to rely on militias for reserves
      • It should be noted that how good these militias depends heavily on the state they're from, the more money that a state puts into their militia, the more effective they are overall and vice versa
      • The average quality of the state militias is ~1 decade behind the national army in terms of equipment and training although there are states that are worse and better than this average
        • The main rifle of the USC is the Rifle Model 1924 or 'RM24', one of the first semi-automatic rifles in the world at the time of it's introduction...
          • The weapon is a byproduct of the Browning-Mauser Firearms Company, headquartered in Cliff City, Utah
            • The Browning-Mauser Firearms Company originally started out as a joint venture of one John Moses Browning and his brother Paul Browning with Peter Paul Mauser and Wilhelm Mauser
          • The weapon fires a 7.92x57 round like the Gallian, but it's more of a fusion of the .30-06 Springfield and 7.92 Mauser in our timeline
            • The round's designation is the .30-85 (.30cal, 1885) Government, and is well known for it's ballistics and hitting power
            • The Gallians managed to gain a small stockpile of the ammunition during the First Europan War, and decided to use it instead of the 7.62mm Imperial Standard round that they used up to that point
      • An oddity that the USC has is the fact that they use genuine MGs with their infantry. While everyone uses some form of HMG in more static roles, the USC utilizes lighter machine guns in the offensive role
        • This led to the adoption of the Model 1925 'Light' Machine Gun or 'MG25', which looks like a bastard child of the MG-34, the MG-42, and the M60
          • This weapon utilizes the same ammunition as the same ammunition as the M24
          • This weapon actually led to the development of the Ruhm
          • The MG25 is somewhat notorious for being somewhat heavy... but that is considered a minor annoyance compared to the flexibility and firepower that it brought
      • The USC is known to be willing to go with something revolutionary from time to time, like the Federal forces during the States Civil War utilizing cartridges and mag-fed rifles instead of the standard muskets.
        • One of these possibly revolutionary weapons is the Model 1930, the world's first rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge
          • The round is similar to the .280 British in our timeline
          • The weapon was originally developed in the 'Armalight' division of Browning-Mauser by a Samuel Stoner and Peter Paul Mauser's son Fredrick Mauser
          • The M30 is well-liked with the troops for it's great combination of handling, firepower, reliability, and weight
          • At the moment, only USC Storm Troopers of the Federal Military utilize this weapon
      • A major difference between the USC and the majority of the world is the use of shotguns in frontline service
        • Most militia shocktroopers in USC service utilize a shotgun and what they call a 'submachine gun' (everyone calls these weapons machine guns)
        • The Shotgun Model 1898 'Trench Gun' (M98) is the standard shotgun and utilizes 10 gauge ammunition (~20mm) but has a reduced barrel length compared to it's civilian counterpart, the civilian model is known as the 'Browning Auto-5'
        • The Machine Pistol Model 1926 (MP26) is the standard submachine gun and utilizes 9mm ammunition
          • It should be noted that the MP26 has 40 rounds standard, with extended magazines giving it 60
          • Despite it's high capacity, the MP26 is noted to be incredibly accurate, especially since it comes with a stock as standard
      • Politically, it's a hodge-poge of pre and post Progressive US; the Senate is still elected by the state legislatures, most of the judicial system isn't elected, etc.
      • Culturally it's a melting pot of cultures, although there are some major ones
        • Germania is a major culture within the USC, especially thanks to the Germanian Disporia after the Empire conquered Germania in the 18th century; many consider retaking their ancestral homeland as a lost cause at this point and have worked to make the USC their new homeland
      • The Native Columbians have quite a bit of racism due to their ancestors' war with the Valkyur depleting the more accessible deposits of ragnite, although many of the rituals they've made -particularly in healing- have been studied by medical practitioners and accepted the world over due to their usefulness
    • Benedict Arnold is a Revolutionary War hero, able to keep the Continental Army alive while George Washington was incapacitated
      • Benedict Arnold would die saving George Washington from a sniper's bullet, his name would become the name of the USC's national military headquarters (Fort Benedict Arnold)
    • Has an industry that is almost as scary -and in some ways scarier- than the Atlantic Federation
    • The USC has been effectively reverse engineering the Theimer series of tanks (which the Edelweiss is a part of) for the last decade and change, leading to the designs of the M3 Medium and M4 Medium tanks (aka the Sherman and Patton respectively)
      • It should be noted that the M1 (the T1 in our universe) was initially developed before the First Europan War, the same war that would lead to the development to the M2 (basically the M2/M5 Stuart tanks) which is noted to have the fastest paper-to-prototype-to-production of any armored vehicle (1 year) and many utility vehicles utilize the chassis that can't be upgraded
      • The M3 had many problems when trying to copy the Theimer series of tanks, leading to many compromises initially like the long 75mm cannon instead of the mid-length 90mm cannon, the lack of a stabilizer and autoloader, among other things... although many of these problems have been rectified by the M3A3 series with the M4 being considered the successor to Theimer's work
      • The USC has been prototyping 'landship killers' due the Imperials sending a few 'land corvettes' to VC!Mexico, they're basically gun carriages mounting naval weapons... yeah, few things are going to be walking away from that...
      • USC procurement has a major emphasis on getting crews and soldiers back home alive, with endurance a close second.
        • This partially evolved into adopting Stosstrupptaktik (Stromtroop Tactic) into the general infantry units and the widespread adoption of automatic weapons in general
        • The entire M2, M3, and M4 series of tanks are designed to maximize the ability for the crew to exit the vehicle without hurting survivability of the vehicle itself
      • It also should be noted that design-wise, they're a fusion of WW2 German and WW2 American gear. This particularly shows up in the navy and artillery. 17cm and 24cm heavy howitzers.
    • Usually nicknamed 'Statesmen'
  • Valkyria Chronicles Japan:
    • Prototype Name: Imperial Republic of Nippon
    • Basically the Republican faction -i.e. those who would found the Republic of Ezio in our world- won the war of the Bakumatsu period
      • Functionally it's a Citizen Republic ala Rome but with Samurai instead of legionaries and there is still an Emperor (who has a lot more power than our timeline, enough to keep the republic in line)
      • The fantasy bit is that while the Valkyur focused on shields and lances, the ancient Nippon have focused solely on swords and fighting styles
        • 'Named' Katanas are similar in Potter-verse wands in the respect that they chose the swordmaster, not the swordmaster choosing the sword
      • The leadership of Nippon have focused on being a merchant empire than a truly imperialist one, mostly because of the Empire's 'excesses' and the fact that they've seen what that sort of thinking will lead you
    • Nippon is the premier naval power in this world, with the Satsuma class 'Battleship' being the HMS Dreadnought of this universe (which it almost did in our universe, only Japan's lack of industrial power caused the Satsuma to use a mixed battery of 10 and 12 inch guns instead of her designed standardized battery of 12 inch guns)
      • However, during a series of military exchanges, it is discovered that the Nipponese Long Lance torpedo was -to put simply- the worst weapon for surface vessels... having a tendency to turn destroyers into splinters and split cruisers into pieces is bad for naval morale
        • This led to the adoption of USC G series of torpedoes, as they were more stable and safer to use
    • Their army and marines are also incredibly effective
      • Much of their equipment utilizes design philosophies from both Gallia, OTL Japan, and the USC
        • If you want to have an idea, think late-war OTL Japanese tanks redesigned to fit into Valkyria Chronicles, but without 'heavy' tanks
        • Nippon tanks are notorious for being able to go into terrain that simply precludes the use of tanks; jungles, mountains, and the like
        • Their small arms is a fusion between USC ergonomics and Gallian and OTL Japan sensibilities
          • The major problem with Nippon weapons is the fact that they use their own proprietary ammunition specific to their nation and are similar to OTL Japanese ammunition
          • This also caused a stigma that Nipponese weapons are weak outside of Nippon's allies
      • As aforementioned, 'named' Katanas are similar to Potter-verse wands in choosing their master, and several samurai families utilize this to choose their next clan leader
  • Valkyria Chronicles Mexico:
    • Prototype Name: Aztecan Province
    • Basically Mexico if it got conquered by the Russians...
      • For many nobles, assignment to this province is considered the equivalent of being assigned to Antarctica... although more progressive thinking nobles think otherwise
    • Militarily the Aztecans utilize older Imperial equipment as a general rule of thumb... partially because of the lack of effective industry and the lack of effective infrastructure
      • The thing about the Aztecans is that they're capable combatants, whose training is almost as through as Nipponese in terms of ability
  • Valkyria Chronicles Canada:
    • Prototype Name: Vinland Federation
    • A member of the Atlantic Federation all but in name, usually used as a pasty to keep the USC in check in the New World
      • One of the more annoying things that the Vinland Federation has is the oodles of Valkyur weapons and artifacts laying within their borders... which has caused no end of grief for the USC.
    • Governmental wise, its essentially a variation of the French Republic model... like the vast majority of the nations within the Federation
  • Valkyria Chronicles Grand Colombia:
    • Prototype Name: Federation of Colombia
    • The founder of the Federation of Colombia is basically VC!Simon Bolivar
    • Well known for their jungle and mountain fighting
      • Also, these skills in fighting also produced some -in the eyes of other nations- scary pieces of kit tailored to said combat conditions
    • They are a key nation within the Third Alliance as they guard the Strait of Panama
  • Valkyria Chronicles Brazil:
    • Prototype Name: Empire of Brazillia
These are some of the changes to canon, some based on inferences, some of them from whole cloth:
  • Valkyria Mechanics:
    • There are male and female Valkyria, but outside of common abilities (like high healing factor), have different 'ability pools' as it were
      • Male Valkyria have buffs and debuffs (the more esoteric orders of the Order System, orders that only Maximilian, Ivan, Gunther, and Irving have shown to utilize) for abilities
    • During the Valkyur's hayday, anyone that didn't surrender quickly tended to be on the receiving end of terrain-altering weapons which leave horrific scars... and some cases a lot of the Ragnite deposits used up
    • Some Valkyria have special traits that make them incredibly unique, like controlling the weather to the point that it becomes the worst winter ever recorded in history...
    • Valkyria can only be activated by weapons keyed to them and their descendants outside of specific scenarios like fatal wounds with a set of weapons being placed on or near their person (this is effectively a safety mechanism in Valkyur weaponry to ensure that simply having Valkyur genes won't allow you to active their weaponry)
      • It should be noted that under certain conditions an 'autopilot' can take over a Valkyur and do immense carnage
      • The Valkyur utilize both training and their instincts to become incredibly powerful
      • It should also be noted the Valkyur can increase their abilities significantly if working with a significant other, previously unstable abilities become stable or even superstable if a Valkyur finds their significant other
  • General:
    • Gallia:
      • Due to the massive influx of money due to the informal axis of power that had developed between Europa War 1 and Europa War 2, the Gallian military is larger and far stronger than OTL
        • However, due to the likes of Damon and his shitstains, the Militia is forced to utilize Gallian 4s instead of Gallian 6s as it were...
          • Not only that, Damon also forced the use of that deathtrap of a tank despite everyone else saying outright that it is a deathtrap...
          • Thaimer and General Gunther made several prototypes -four series in total with four in each series-
    • The Empire:
      • The Empire is less politically straight forward than one might think, as a myriad of factions are at play with various crown princes and princesses being leaders of these factions; these factions play into the eventual election of the next Emperor be by death (of natural or unnatural causes), abdication, or the Council of Nobles having a super-majority of forcing the current emperor to stand down
        • Crown Prince Maximilian is the current head of the Meritocratic Faction within the Empire
          • Please note that this faction is currently one of the largest factions within the empire, with 45% of the citizenry, 95% of the lower nobles, 35% of the middle nobles, and 15% of the upper nobles supporting the faction
            • This is partially because many of the reforms within the Empire have come from the Meritocratic Faction, and despite not all the reforms being put into action were quite successful
          • Maximilian's brother Leonidas is the current (non-ruling) head of the Conservative Faction, taking the position from their father Emperor Muravyov
        • In order to become Emperor, you have to get elected by the Electors... many of which also -between elections of the Emperor- have a seat on the Council of Nobles
        • The Empire is still a modernizing nation, and this is only due to the shear size of the Empire
    • The Atlantic Federation:
      • Originally grew out of the Atlantic Alliance created by Valkyria Chronicles version of Napoleon Bonaparte... who did go full Roman Dictator for a better part of the decade because proto-Imperial Alliance decided to fuck with him and the democratic revolution
        • Here's the thing, the moment that VC!Napoleon got a solid and decisive peace treaty setup, he stepped down as Dictator... allowing the position to be taken in times where politics would only get in the way of fighting effectively
          • It is said that whenever Napoleon started back home, the proto-Imperial Alliance declared war... again; this continued until the decisive Battle of Cologone in December of 1813, ending VC's version of the Napoleonic Wars.
        • By the time Operation Northern Cross started, the Atlantic Federation Combined Congress ratified the Articles of Dictatorship as the situation is that dire and the politics were simply causing more problems than solutions
          • It would be these politics that allow this preference to subterfuge and cloak-and-dagger geopolitical tactics than pure brute force that the Empire prefers

Nice idea, love the games, so I am interested in how you work this idea out.

First I've got to get the base assumptions out there, so expect the OP to be continuously modified in the coming days.

No problem, also any plans to do a British type of country.
The assumption is that that either a) they're part of the Atlantic Federation or b) part of the Empire...

A okay, so no independent British isles then.
Yeah, the Federation and Empire are the type that don't want independent factors to their geopolitical game, and that is why this informal axis of power is happening. Basically the Empire's and Federation's meddling caused a self-fulfilling prophecy to happen.

Oops...

Looking at the map of the game, i can see the British version being called the United Kingdom of Edinburgh and it seems you are right, it is a member of the federation.

Yeah... and that is a problem.

That is true, especially if the Edinburgh Navy is comparable to OTL Royal Navy.
Here's the thing, the Royal Navy slated mostly Auxiliary cruisers for the illegal blockade of Imperial Germany in WW1. Those would get slaughtered by a genuine warship, let alone a battleship. Add to the fact that most of the Federation's numerous fleets would have to go out and stop Imperial and Imperial-aligned navies as well...

Doubt Gallia has a powerful navy to stop either the Federation ore the Alliance.

Enough to keep either from controlling Gallia's territorial waters, yes. Especially in the context of the greater scope of the war. Not to mention that the northern 'lip' of what is essentially the North Sea is incredibly wide, meaning that if the Federation goes forward with a blockade, a lot of auxiliary cruisers have to be deployed to do so.

Those would get slaughtered by a genuine warship, let alone a battleship.
The problem is the Gallian Navy is apparently extremely weak. With thier most modern ship being some 12,000 ton ships armed with 2 12 inch and 2 8 inch guns and I can only desribe it as some kind of armourd crusier. It's only real upside is that it can make 34 knots. But this thing is literally a sitting duck if the federation or the imperials have anything like a battlecrusier or fast battleship.

Problem with that is that in this case, both sides have far too many places to have their BBs and BCs, as both are extremely expensive and resource consuming. Also, please note that the canon Gallian fleet is based on an isolationist-ish stance, not with an alliance with a premier naval power (Nippon) and the industrial juggernaut of the planet (USC).

I'm not so sure going by the maps the empie only has two strips of land that have warm water ports and only one real way for reinforments to get to Gallia thiers not that many directions they have to defend. Especially considering the distances involved will likely force the the US and nippon to go extreme distances or go thru a very easily defendable straight most likely with limited screening vessels due to the ranges involved.

Technically thier Navy's small because they have to spend the majority of thier budget on the army to avoid being run over by the Federation/empire in a week. Which probably wouldn't really change much in your tl due to the fact that they would still need a large army to avoid having the (what's the formal name of this little coalition of yours?) Only bridgehead on the otherside of the Atlantic overwhelmed. And it's going to be hard to supply and renforce them due to the fact that thier an ocean away and VC britian and other associated islands is literally right in the perfect spot to blockade Gallia. Hmm I wonder if the us might invest in transport subs since thier greatest threat aircraft aren't a thing in VC.

Actually, given both Nippon and the USC having states/colonies/holdings across the pacific, they would probably have the 'long legged' ships a lot like our world. Given that ships like the Fletcher can go a little more than half-way across the pacific on one tank...

Actually Gallia has the opposite of Imperial Japan's problem. It had very little funding compared to the Federation and the Empire so it focused on the army. If there is a lot of money coming it's way, the navy would be bigger alongside the army being better equipped. You must also remember that in RL that the US was the one nation that kept every naval power up at night, as it was essentially Germany in terms of economic, industrial, technological, and population power... just with moats Atlantic and Pacific making it impossible get the forces required over.

Hey, I remember this one. Here's the link to the old thread where we were brainstorming this. I think the stuff regarding Columbia started around page 15.

To build off of the Columbia stuff: A lot of the design and world-building details for Columbia are based around the country's lack of Ragnite. The old war between the Valkyur and the Native Columbian went full scorched earth and the natives apparently did their best to deprive the Valkyur of their magic rock. As such, Columbia is starved for Ragnite, with their only native sources being Ragnite sands down in Tejas. A poor sources in a vulnerable border state. As such, they started shacking up with Gallia geopolitically to get that sweet, sweet high-grade Ragnite to fuel their burgeoning industry. This means that Columbians don't have surplus ragnite for use, hence changes like using shotguns rather than flamethrowers.

The Axis of Neutrality (I don't remember if we ever came up with a name) is basically a loose set of economic and diplomatic tripwires designed to ward off encroachment from the Empire and Federation. Gallia provides Ragnite and technology, the USC provides industry and technological development, the IRN adds naval and projection power, while Grand Columbia ties in a southern quadrant.

How we developed past that I can't remember, but I do remember wanting to add a USC tripwire armored battalion in Gallia. Basically a token Columbian unit in a Gallian port to up the stake of any invasion.

Hey Aaron Fox, why are we doing this here rather than on SB?

Well, at the time that I went full worldbuilding on this, I was under a three-month temp ban on SB... and I was perma-banned on SV...

Ah, yeah that would do it.
Yeah, so... any ideas you want to pass on?

I was thinking having the majority of the easy to extract deposits of ragnite be depleted in the war between the Native Colombians and the Valkyrur, with the few remaining deposits either being of poor quality (like VC!Texas) or in locations where extraction is fuck hard (VC!Navada, VC!Badlands, the like) with their tech.

That stays consistent with Columbia's Ragnite starvation and having it be a theme across the New World would make for interesting technological divergences. As for ideas?

I don't remember what we covered in regards to Atlantic naval strength, but I had thought that Gallia's navy would be fairly restricted to coastal monitors and other light to medium vessels. Columbia's navy would be cruiser heavy prior to their economic alliance with Gallia, with war plans to defend the coast with torpedo boats and other craft small enough to fall back into coastal inlets. The influx of high-grade Ragnite though would let them start construction on the equivalents to the Standard-type battleships. While powerful capital ships in their own right, the Standards lack the sheer power of the various superships entering construction in the Federation and Empire, leaving the Columbian Line behind their contemporaries. Lessons learned from Nippon make the battleships worth more per pound though, much like the American Heavy Frigates seen IRL.

You already covered the difference between State and Federal soldiers, but with enemies to the north and south Columbia would be more restricted in what aid they could offer overseas, hence the tripwire unit I mentioned above. The existence of State Armies also adds political strain to the Union at inopportune times. As such, the Columbians tend to use the State units to sandbag enemies so that the Federal units can position for counterattacks. This works better in the south and west where they can play defense in depth to some degree, compared tot he northeast where there's no ground to give up.

The geopolitical issue for the Federation and Empire in this scenario is trying to get the other to cross the Axis first. The Federation in particular really needs as many neutrals to bleed off strength from the Empire as possible, whereas the Empire thinks it can pull off a multifront war, but would rather not try. This makes Maximillian's invasion of Gallia a much bigger deal than it would normally be and there's a shit ton of Court wrangling involved. The Federation is also doing its best to undermine the Axis diplomatically and economically while trying to leave false flags leading to the Empire.

Those are the thoughts I've had thus far, not mcuh time to mull over it right now.
