More like gain the ability to actually build one from scratch?

It would be a huge boost to its already impressive shipbuilding ability.

If they simply wanted to boast having one there are some wrecks floating about they could buy for the cool points.

Oooohhh thats cool. Do we know the size? Are we talking a really light thing like the Spanish Juan Carlos or something more medium sized like the Lioaning or the QEs?

Ok but what for? It's not like SK need to project force or something, and any potential future conflict would likely take place right near home.

National prestige I guess?

I'm honestly surprised they didn't have one already.

It's good to have a strong blue-water navy, especially for a country next to China and Japan, all rather powerful naval powers.

China? A naval power? Last that those two were in a sentence it was gone in an afternoon.

Most likely the PLAN will end up just like the Beiyang Fleet, if not more humiliating.

Hmmm, I wouldn't underestimate China navy. Though the days of major budget increases for PLAN may be drawing to a close.

For what? Honestly, South Korea needs to rein in its own crazy version of nationalism. Unless you are telling us that Korea expects that Japan and China will together gang up on Korea.

PLAN construction capabilities are many times that of Korea, believe it or not.

I think the area where China is weak is doctrine and tactics where they are lacking but they are definitely doing their best to catch up in other areas.

Wth do they need that for? NK ain't gonna threaten them anyaway, and it is a waste of time to try to defend against China.

Perhaps it's a graft?

The reason is quite simple to discern. They want all those countries who say, "hmm, maybe we should have a carrier for ourselves, but we don't have the means to make one ourselves" to see their carrier and buy one.

They do the same with all of their other warships. "We can build a thing! Say, do you want one? We can build to order!"

It is advertising first, actual need second. Though considering some of their neighbors, a deployable force projection craft makes that second reason still good enough. Not everyone around the world is as wasteful in spending as the US is either, so it needn't be exorbitantly expensive either.

Yeah, huh, sorry to say, but Naval Group here has been trying this for decades, based on their experience building CdG. Doesn't work.

Yeah, but yours don't come with a big blue "SAMSUNG" on the side, do they?

If all else fails, they get a cool little carrier with which they can find some use. If they can lure in some customers with "Our shipyards can handle any project, come look and see what they can do for you" then so much the better as far as they are concerned.

Sounds cool. You think they'd sell us one of these? Better than trusting to our mercurial defence budget.

I'm sure that if you asked they might sell to you.

Though, as Rufus can attest, they might want to overcharge and get a large chunk of money upfront. It's not just the budget, it is the procurement process itself that damages the ability for contractors to sell their wares.
