Lady Thatcher met her old friend General Augusto Pinochet today, pointedly thanking him for serving as Britain's ally during the 1982 Falklands war and noting that he had "brought democracy to Chile".
The meeting took place at the rented mansion in Wentworth, Surrey, where the former Chilean dictator remains under police guard.

No, she gave it over because trying to haggle the deal would not only get the US pissed (the US was pushing the Sino-Soviet split rather hard, that is why reactions to Tienanmen Square were no more than strongly worded letters) and against her government (which would be financially and diplomatically disastrous) but cause a war, a war that is almost certainly end in failure for her with hundreds of thousands (minimum!) of Hong Kong residents dead from the shelling and combat, the garrison and everyone whatever reinforcements she sent being killed or captured, and the US in a really pissed off mood... pissed off enough that it might just prepare to dismantle Britain as a political, economic, and military entity if the Queen doesn't simply go out and tell her that she isn't Prime Minister anymore and give her to the Americans on a silver platter.

That sort of scenario would make a 'Pearl of the Orient' scenario only a lopsided Chinese victory with Hong Kong severely damaged.
