Stockholm syndrome is a thing though, and it's important to remember that abolition only gained traction in western civilization when industrialization started to drive costs down and you can see the correlation between more industrialized counties like the UK ending slavery earlier then less industrialized counties like Mauritania that still has them!
And if their isn't any abolitionist movement how does society at large view slaves? How do slaves view slaves? It very well may be just another part of life for all participants involved. Sure if your master dies on the road side you might gtfo because you're free now, or maybe you'd get depressed, lacking direction, and a afried of the chaos your freedom provides.
People today can fall into a deep crippling depression when their parent who beat and molested them dies suddenly, I don't see why a slave couldn't have a screwed up mindset like that.
