Also an accomplished pianist...
Well, he played his voters beautifully. What was it he promised? Peace in Donbass, end to corruption, economic prosperity. He almost got it - peace with corruption, end to economic prosperity...
It's incredible how little have things in Ukraine changed since the late 1990's, despite the massive show and daily streams of incredible statements. As it was a neo-feudal system of economic fiefdoms, so it has remained.

Btw, the 'anti-oligarchic' law was adopted today. Popcorn futures are soaring more than natural gas :)

STATE OF EMERGENCY EXTENDED FOR ANOTHER 60 DAYS IN THE POLISH-BELARUSSIAN BORDER BELT

It has happened.

After yesterdays thunderous session Sejm decided to exetend the State of Emrgency. Also planned is perimietrization of the Polish-Belarussian Broder.
Minister of Interior also demoted gossips about evertly large amount of "leakers" being apprechended in Germany.
Also of note after extended screening of imigrants, there is conformed at least one active member of Islamic State who was collaborating with one of arrested members in Western Europe on conducting terrorist attack. There is also at least one confirmed member of Palestine related terrorist cell and few members of Middle East paramilitary organisations whose current status of affiliation and alligence is stil being determined.

Overall, over 60 % of people trying illegally crossing the border are from Iraq. There is at least one confirmed member who was suppsedly undergoing training in Russian military camp in Urals, with he being a part of an approximately 30 strong group selceted to be illegaly send to Poland.

Minister have been explicitly stressing the sexual and moral degenaration of imigrants based on the secured electronic material in form of photographs from their cellular devices showing intercourse with animals and underaged children, in relateion to the previous press briefing.

Sejm's session turned into the both major parties ranting at each other with party holding power (PiS) openly laughing on their opponets and one of PiS or alligend with them party openly stated that he will be voting for extension of State of Emergency just so "leftist clowns" would be unable to interfere with their rule, to the deafening applause of the current Parliamentary majority.

Also there are vocal demands to buid "real wall" seperating Polish and Belarus.

Despite know breach of national security and real challenges, many people do not believe current government about their intentions nor evidence presented, calling them into doubt. Given the past 6 years of rule, utter lack of real crisis management of the Pandemy nor mitigation of spinning economic crisis, the Governmrnt is being considered as a morally bankrupt and is not trusted anymore. Years of aggressive agitation aimed on creating divisions inside own society with goal of shaping favourable electorial enviroment have divided Poles on the matter and sown fear, that is now expertly exploited by the current rulers.

Also of note is the fact that in 2023 there will be another elections. And very distressing statement of one of the governmental officals from before 2 weeks stating about possible extension to the January 2022 - it is, by current state of law in Poland impossible. If 90 days of State of Emergency did not solved problem the only other option if crisis continues, is declaration of Martial Law, which can last as long as it is necessary and suspends elections, among many other harsh restrictions.

Like, seriously? And I guess that according to him there are witches and demons in human flesh among them too, right? How about making them all wear some special sign so that people can avoid them... like, a 6-pointed yellow star maybe?
We've come through things like this in the last century. Any moron trying to repeat them should be expressly locked up. For good.

Solving the problem on the border serves no purpouse for any intrested party - till there are still suffering people there is still hope to earn some electorral points.
It is a problem that mandates necessary crisis management skills with simultanous international cooperation and proper PR management. Only real thing that is happning is electoral circuis.

Ah welcome to the neverending state of emergency, a time honored tradition of (semi-)authoritarian governments to push through whatever shit they want to. Over here in Hungary, the special state of emergency regarding migrants on the southern border have been ongoing continuously since 2016, and the general state of emergency due to the COVID have been duly extended every 6 month since 2020 spring.

This seems to be turning much darker, than just a lying moron finding pretext for keeping people in fear. We already went through a period when one group of people was bad, evil, dirty - untermenschen, and the other group needed to protect itself from the dirty untermenschen using first edicts, then walls, then barbed wire, and then gas, starvation, torture and mass shootings. When I read 'this group of ethically distinct people are pedophiles and zoophiles' alarms start blaring in my head. I don't know that guy who said it, but he needs to be removed from any position of public influence like yesterday.

(Yes, I am aware it is not the best source, mainly posting this out of curiosity)

As the article writes, Russia would consider it rude to try and prevent its good customer Turkey from making money off hapless Ukrainians. TB2s are defenseless against Russian SAMs, and Russia has very good opportunity to get its hands on some, either by buying them from corrupt Ukrainian officers or by hijacking their control links. Additionally, they give the Ukrainian leadership a false sense of power, which could push it towards some overly aggressive moves that could be nicely exploited for a nasty slap into the face for Ze, the VSU and SBU. We've gotten to the point in the conflict where Russia won't hesitate to openly defend Donbass, should VSU try something serious. That's because a) its relations with the West have deteriorated to the point when it can't get much worse without it getting too difficult for the West - especially the EU - too, and b) there's large public demand in Russia itself for protecting Donbass and punishing the Ukrainian elites for any aggressive behavior.

They are realising a cardinal objectives of any political party - take and hold power. Funny think the KOR fundamentals of PiS during 80s were classified by Security Service as nationalist elements are were main cases of real fears of starting civil war (note that in 80s Wałęsa started losing control over mass movement he has become face of), which actually failitated decision of declaring martial law and deploying carpet pacification of whole nation.
PiS view of Poland is some twisted literal Lindtopia full of communist hunting and historical justice, ie. lynch of former enemies. In retrospect now after 4 decades since last martial law one can see why Jaruzelski decided for using such extreme measure.

As for Bayraktars and Ukraine it is old news. poland also have signed deal with Turks for two squadrons.

There seem to be interesting changes in the Russian microelectronics industry. Apart from the (now fixed from the very top) decision towards use of native software and hardware in state and state-connected sectors, basically everywhere where state money is used to buy microelectronics (and that may be some 50-70% of the whole market), the situation around native fabrication seems to have changed. While in the past most industry specialists were saying that building domestic fabrication of anything below 65 nm is too difficult, I have seen recently two different interviews where serious insiders treat the question as decided towards really building domestic 28 nm + 16 nm fab. As it seems, it will be part of Mikron. It was admitted by a specialist from MCST (head of the development department) during a presentation at SECON 2021 and also by the development director of Baikal in an interview to the PRO Hi-Tech channel.
Additionally, I've seen confirmation of the news that Russian industry has been hiring Taiwanese semiconductor specialists, most likely precisely for the above mentioned project.

Trump's little trade war with China led to quite a bit of free talent in TSMC looking for new opportunities. It also sent a warning to anyone who bothered to listen, is that you could lose access to high technology even if your supplier is not American, but will lose more due to US sanctions, than your sanctions. Same trade war also led to China vacuuming up talent (from TSMC too) and second hand semiconductor manufacturing equipment like there is no tomorrow, making sure that they have a tech base to develop their own capabilities, because well, access to any foreign technology the US has a hold of, could, and will be cut off on short notice in the future. Since then, we also know, that changing the occupant of the Oval Office has no effect on this.

Getting 28/14nm would cover most of the needs for most applications really, from FPGAs, ARM processors etc. Not the best but good enough for most needs.
They're going for 28+16, because their 6th generation Elbrus CPUs (Elbrus-16S and Elbrus-2S3) are 16 nm design. There was also talk about a follow-up with 7 nm process (the upcoming Elbrus-32S is 7 nm IIRC) but I'll believe it when I'll see them actually building the 16 nm fab.

The industry used to work in such a way that many of the 2nd tier fabs bought up older equipment that did the older processes. But with the current semiconductor shortage, I'm not sure. But as with anything cyclical, I would be wary of overinvesting in capacity. I remember seeing a line that much of the existing Russian equipment came from the old AMD fab in Dresden. But I haven't seen a 2nd confirmation.

Their reasons aren't purely economic, it's mainly about security. Running on intels or AMDs means letting NSA do with your net whatever it wants. So they're moving the whole state, critical infrastucture, state-owned corporations sectors to domestic sw and domestic hw.
If not for the current shortage and long waiting times, from January 2022 state corporations would be allowed to buy only computers with domestic CPUs (Elbrus, Baikal, Elvis). There was a fight among CPU producers and computer producers what to do about the obvious impossibility of this deadline, considering that they would need some 300 000 + CPUs which TSMC just can't deliver. Baikal is so-so, they have about 130 000 Baikal-M processors on hand, but TSMC doesn't have nearly enough Elbrus-8SV to fulfill orders. In the end, CPU producers largely won, and the government confirmed for the final time that it is absolutely dedicated to the move towards domestic microelectronics. No wonder, their PM Mishustin is a computer buff. In 2022 it will be possible for state corps to buy foreign hw only if there's no chance to buy something roughly equivalent that's domestic. And it's clear that if somebody tries to misuse this exception from the rules, the government won't be happy or forgiving.

For me it's absolutely fascinating that this 'gas station masquerading as a country' is obviously orders of magnitude more developed in cyber security than my dear European Union. Purely from professional curiosity I'd love to get my hands on a computer running on Elbrus-8SV and try out the processor's nifty security mode. It has a military legacy and hardware protection against 90+ % of the usual security holes that plague the intel architecture.

They are also moving into Risc-V which is open source relative to ARM. I think that is intended for more power-lite applications where power consumption is more important.

The problem with the EU is half the bloody lot are content to let the Americans take lead, but no one bothered to realise that "Anglos gonna Anglo" at the end of the day and "America First" has always been there since the beginning.

One thing Russia has to look at is FPGAs and other kinds of microcontrollers. I remember reading that is a big problem because the US banned the export of certain FPGAs and what not and these things are rather important for flight controls etc.

From their perspective it is seen as an existentional necessity having roots in the first 50 years of XX century. Also Russians have first hand experianced what means relying too much on foreing software running critical infrastructure. Besides, let's be frank, depending on foreign hardware and software for supporting national security infrastructure is not the best way of doing things. Still remember as last year pseudo analysts were laughing on Chinese that they went the same way, implying collapse of PRC's administration rather than seeing that they have simply reach the point where they have capacit and capabilities to suplement foreing tech with equal or better homemade.

Also given how security enviroment is structured post 1989 and especially in first decade of XXI century in realtion of Russian Federation vis USA globally, these were priorities.
Also of note info security was a thing from begining, especially noted when first automatised command and control systems were introduced, where prevention for access for people without proper clearence was strict. Encryption also.

But as we all know, it is a simple minded sovietism constructed to thwart individuality, freedom and critical thinking.

They do produce a plethora of domestic microcontrollers - some clones of foreign designs, some developed independently - and also FPGAs. According to what I've seen in the interviews, they don't have a problem there, especially since they mostly don't need anything smaller than the 90 nm that Mikron can do.

They are one of few nation states that can create advanced military hardware from grounds up, with every single screw and line of code being made locally, which makes such assumptions logical.
Also the sanctions and attempts of destabilisaing supply chains makes a necessity developement of domestic capabilities, vide case of lighting systems for landing pads on Russian warships - they were imported from abroad. Since US sanctioned the European company (of note is the fact that they were also supplying US Navy) and forced sale closure, Russia have had developed their own version and US de facto created that way not only second technological line but alternative supplier.
That how's interconnected globalised economy works. US is not accustomed for existing in such enviroment. That is why most recent years of throwing their weight around ended with pissing off many actors, allies and non-aligned alike.

Yep, it's the same story as with the compozite wings for MS-21. Now f-ing Rosatom is an important carbon composite manufacturer :)

Security can mean a lot of things, so there might be a case where their new domestically developed hardware and software have it's own security issues, which are yet to be found, because they never had the resources to throw at the issue.

Otherwise yeah, it's darkly amusing, that currently the only governments that have anything resembling long term plans (longer than the time to the next elections), are the full*, or semi-authoritarians.

What lurks in imported software/hardware was always a big issue for the Soviets, or the other COMECON countries (especially paired with the COCOM list of banned goods), something that never really went away in the silovik circles. And the issue got some extra boost after the Snowden leaks.
