EDIT:
Heads up be careful as coronavirus online maps are being used to spread malware.

From what I've read if you live in the USA there is no reason to panic even with that one case in Seattle as of this posting. As for China they say wait and see till after Chinese New Year festivities due to the two week incubation period of the virus. Though some people in China and abroad have begun to cancel their trips. Also looking over Chinese social media there's a lack of trust in there media's coverage of the virus and allegations that some lower level officials tried to hide the fact the virus had spread to their cities before word came down from Beijing that there would be consequences for doing that.

Lesser known fact: Coronavirus also is why Corona beer is drunk in Fast and Furious movies when they have never paid for product placement.

Family.

Didn't the Chinese government cut off travel to and from Wuhan (virus epicenter) by now?
They declared RACCOON on several cities, roughly 30 mil people in total.

(Fun fact, there's cat 4 b-lab in Wuhan)

Oh yeah. That shit is locked down tight.

"Strictly implement emergency response requirements, enter into a state of war and implement wartime measures to resolutely curb the spread of this epidemic," urged a committee of Wuhan's top officials. "Homes must be segregated, neighbors must be watched."
...
Beginning at 10 a.m. local time (9 p.m. Wednesday ET), authorities in Wuhan, about 500 miles west of Shanghai, started sealing off public transportation, including its metro system, airport, train station and long-haul bus hubs. Livestreamed videos from the city show soldiers wearing face masks barricading the entrances to the city's train station Thursday morning to prevent passengers from entering and leaving the city.

As of early afternoon, cars were still allowed to exit Wuhan, the epicenter of a rapidly growing outbreak of a coronavirus that has sickened 830 people within China and killed 25, according to health authorities.

But officials also began sealing off highways entering the city. Authorities said they were screening passengers leaving and entering Wuhan, checking for fever and the illegal transport of wild animals thought to be the original vector for the virus.

They even shut down Chinese New Year celebrations, including blockbuster movie releases. Considering that movies during this time will bring in hundreds of millions of dollar-equivalents, this is a really big deal.

You can say that, yeah, as they are constructing a hospital from the ground up to treat the infected. Which is quite baffling, as PLA should have deployed a field hospital in less than 24 hours.

I heard that within 7 km of where the outbreak started (a meat wet market), there was a community banquet of 100K people eating from the same dishes, which was a couple days after there were already around fifty reported cases of infected people. Kind of illustrative of the rather dysfunctional and arse-covering handling of the outbreak in general (which means it was likely that it was around significantly longer than officially reported).

^Source. Bonus: Chinese memes at the end.

The Chinese government response is better than the SARS outbreak in the early 2000's, but as pointed out by posters and the news still rather lacking in some areas and as result the number of people infected and hopefully only a small percentage are going to die is going to be higher than if they acted earlier as only in the last few days did they undertake major steps to contain this.

Also a lot of people in China are playing Plague Inc as a short of coping mechanism.

The news is saying two cases confirmed. France has developed a test allowing medics to rapidly diagnose people.

A second confirmed case in the US, a Chicago woman that had traveled to Wuhan.

A Chinese woman boasted that she cheated checks causing a social media firestorm.

Well, fuck. You would have thought that bloody China of all places would know about quarantine what with all those reeducation camps. Or did Deng do away with those?

What do you mean? it sounds like Authoritarian dictatorships are the best place to impose a quarantine in, provided the leadership actually admits there is a problem or it does not rely on Jesus to fix everything?

Well China missed "golden period of time" to limit the number of cases and deaths. Another issue is that some experts are worried that the quarantine may backfire as this bit from the Post article talks about.

"Cordoning off a region like China's Hubei province pens the sick together with the uninfected. It increases the burden on authorities, who must ensure the flow of food, water and other supplies to the quarantined area. It is nearly impossible to enforce. And it sows distrust in government at a time when public support is essential, prompting people to evade the restrictions or refuse to report their symptoms, experts said. "

There using the reeducation camps for Uyghurs and other Chinses Muslims and built new ones.

Just a sarcastic comment on China not doing a very good job in containing flu epidemics. SARS, the H5N1 bird flu and now this new coronavirus.

*Checks sarcasm module, seems the bloody thing is always broken*

There are unfortunately very few ways to prevent the spread of disease. At best this is the usual self-projection of American notions of freedom.

But ultimately, I suspect that this has already reached SARS level of nonsense because of the incompetence of Wuhan authorities. Some Chinese guy I know told me that city has a reputation for being "the City of Liars".

:ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

The probable hot zone where this virus started to spread was a "wet market". AKA choppy choppy bloody bloody sprayee sprayee everywhere and never a single drop of antiseptic applied to the entire area. Ever. Just hose the blood and entrails and shit down the grates at the end of the day. Pork, beef, poultry, seafood, all sitting in the open throughout the day and then contaminating everything because there are no actual walls between the biomatter flying through the air as it is cut and flung about recklessly.

If you say that there is no way to prevent this sort of thing from happening you are more full of shit than the intestines at a wet market. Food safety works. It doesn't stop everything, but it makes an outbreak like this one nearly impossible.

Actually, it probably gets worse. That same person also told me that it is a known novelty in those parts for restaurants to slaughter live animals in the restaurant itself for customers just when ordered. They supposedly banned it, but no one pays attention.

It is a 50/50 problem.

Most of the butchered animals sit in the open, without any sort of refrigeration. This attracts insects and vermin.

If the animal starts off living there is a chance that they spread biomatter around either by getting loose, or by kicking/flinging debris out of their cages.

Either way, those sorts of markets are notorious for food poisoning and other health matters. Simple measures like stall walls to prevent cross-contamination or using disinfectant would reduce the problems quite a bit, but it is tradition and many of the proprietors are so poor that they couldn't afford to keep product in a cold sealed case, so things are unlikely to change.
