Growing Horizons: Inner Sphere - Quest

Ah ok still trying to get a feel for how this is run. See what happens tomorrow. Been years since touched a online game like this but this does look very interesting.
Hehehe...

I certainly plan some curveballs...

Turn 22 - Winter 2179/3029

WCDC Defense Council:

[] System Defense MKII: active
Time: 4 turns, Chance of success: 65%
Roll 1 of 4, Roll 1d100: 36 - Success
Roll 2 of 4, Roll 1d100: 75 - Success
Roll 3 of 4, Roll 1d100: 34 - Failure
Roll 4 of 4, Roll 1d100: 63 - Success
Combined: 52 - Success

Finally, after another year of construction, the additional Raytan Point Defense Stations were placed in the Jump Points of Sil, 61 Virginis and Bety Hadrii. They were joined by a squadron of the new light combat craft each, made up of sixteen Sleipnir and four Im-umi class craft. Adapting the new combat doctrine, two of the Sleipnirs and one of the Im-umi of each squadron were build as Autowars, commanded and controlled by AGI volunteers.

On Hannover, two squadrons of similar makeup are put into service for a closer up defense, though the defense itself was limited, mostly due to insufficient experience of the new Hannoverian Weltraumverteidigung. To help reduce this inexperience, both the German Raumflotte and the Cereran Armed Forces sent out cadre to help training the new space forces, due to use of the German language of all three nations in one form or another. It was hoped the Hannoverian space force would hold its own within a year, though it was expected the first crews would quickly find themselves in a position of cadre for more recruits in the Weltraumverteidigung.

Washington had come into the program late and with a more limited exposure to WCDC technology. As such, there were only limited ways to improve the defense of the Washington system, mostly consisting of the Washington Space Force buying a squadron of Sleipnir and Im-umi class craft from dockyards in Sol, Bety Hydrii and 61 Virginis.

Reward: Two additional Raytan Jump Point Defense Stations placed into the Jump Points of Sol, 61 Virginis and Bety Hydrii, supported by two Squadrons of Sleipnir and Im-umi each, +10 against belligerent jumpships and dropships

Much to the chagrin of the Project Team that had begun the development of Battlemechs over the past nine months, the new Project Team tasked with developing more conventional means of fighting a conventional combined forces engagement against Battlemechs was better received by the Armed Forces of the WCDC in general. However, there was an interest in the 55 tonne 'Fusilier' Battlemech design, specially designed with MIL-STD-102343 in mind to be capable of carrying a varied weapon load.

Other more conventional designs were prepared however, including designs for a Main Battle Tank, Infantry Fighting Vehicles, Armored Cars and indirect fire support vehicles, all designed with MIL-STD-102343 and the new armor in mind. To improve the logistics train, more standardization was suggested, in the drive train and other areas.

Indeed, it appeared that the Project Team would be making sure that MIL-STD-102343 would be adopted within the ground forces as well.

The Survey Squadron of the Erdvynn Project reached the system that was, in the last days of the previous iteration, identified as Erdvynn. Having learned from the previous failure of the project, a quick survey of the system was made, showing that the sole planet in the habitable zone of the system had been literally bombed back into the stone age. Where cities may once have been, were now fields of craters and from orbit it was impossible to say if anyone had survived on the planet. Some cursory atmospheric probes were able to detect some tribes of survivors making do in a stone age way of life, some settled and some nomadic.

It was however possible to find the remains of a couple of communication satellites in orbit around the planet. From them, some intact memory could be read and the fragments of communication were decipherable. These fragments identified the world below ad Erdvynn.

This was greeted with enthusiasm and a closer optical and radar survey of the entire system was made of the entire volume. By the end of Winter, it was possible to identify a cluster of derelicts in a highly inclined, elliptic orbit around the primary, with at least eight huge derelicts.

The Survey continued with some success and by the end of Winter, it was possible to identify three new habited worlds.

Reykjavik, a world settled by Islanders in the 23rd century, but had completely backslid into a bonze age tribal society, making it unlikely to open direct contact.

Mafine, a world settled from Guinea around the same time, with a technology level comparable to the 1940s and a Council of Elders as the main government.

And finally Mikhaylovka, which represented a world habited by descendants of Siberian settlers that had developed a successful democratic form of Leninism with limited private enterprise and a 1930s level of technology.

The diplomatic missions to the ANZAC Union, Rovaniemi and Malwa ended completely successful, with the creation of three more embassies on Woomera, Rovaniemi and Malwa, after the Finnish and Indian governments on the latter worlds have been convinced by the diplomats. Partially this was managed by notifying that the spacecraft present to support the embassies would improve the security against pirates.

As the initial reaction to settling previously abandoned worlds was less than ideal to the WCDCTO, it did not change much in the aftermath. While there are some organizations that show some slight interest, almost all organizations that are targeted by the incentives for settling these worlds are not interested, preferring instead to send more settlers to Alden and Eridu, even if especially Alden presents much larger targets for settling, being a water world where settlements needed to be constructed on artificial floating islands.

Work on the newly improved ideas for FTL communication continued, with some enlightening science coming out of all projects.

A better understanding of HPG theory and by inference some of its technology, especially through the observation of Comstar HPGs, allowed the project to advance as an acceptable pace.

The KF Wave Generator however gave some better understanding on the propagation of waves through the medium of 8 dimensional Heim-Feynman Space, even though it was expressed as a 5 dimensional space in KF theory. Theoretically, a communication system making use of these waves would have been somewhat limited in FTL speed and transmission capacity, but those problems were mostly comparable to the early days of conventional electromagnetic radio and theoretically easy to overcome.

The third possible avenue of FTL communication got more of an expression as the first paper appeared, showing the possibility of creating a permanent communication link through Heim-Feynman space between two points, with an initially large energy input lowered to a limited energy level for continuous operation. In the paper, there was the proposal that such a system could be used in a packet switched network topology which would make such a FTL com network very robust.

Smart Dust turned out to have been an acceptable idea to use to get a better understanding of the structure of the Invader class Jump Drive. Making use of sonic and electromagnetic scanning methods had been an excellent choice and the results were acceptable to investigators of the Project, yielding a complete 3D model of a jump drive. This model in turn could be transformed into a mathematical model with relative ease and simplified. The simplified model in turn showed a close resemblance to the model created with the help of the broken jump drives.

As the Smart Dust scanning of the Invader Jump Core turned out to be harmless to the core, the military gave the green light to repeat the scan with the Drive Core of the Star Lord class jumpship recovered from the Black Warrior attack.

Deep Space Signal Intelligence Network Report

Lothian League:

Nothing of interest happens

Illyrian Palatinate:

Nothing of interest happens

Circinus Federation:

There appears to be more contact between the government of Circinus and Comstar as decrypted ROM messages are read from the HPG Radio Backscatter. For the moment, it is unclear what reason this increased contact might have.

Marian Hegemony

The first two systems of the Marian Hegemony are seeded with Survey Satellites, but bring no current information that would be of use.

Inner Sphere:

The Inner Sphere is still roiling from the immediate aftermath of the 4th Successor War. Sabre rattling between the Federated Suns and the Combine continues over several worlds that have changed hands, in some cases multiple times.

The Capellan Confederation for now looks like it might collapse from the massive loss of worlds and almost all its industry and its capital world. Chancellor Romano Liao was forced to move the capital back to Capella after several centuries. More appalling however was a Stalinist purge of almost the entirety of the military and intelligence leadership of the Confederation, likely resulting in a heavy loss of talent and ability. The bounty on the head of Candance Loiao was not unexpected in the aftermath.

In The Free Worlds League, the aftermath of the 4th Successor War led directly into a secession of the Duchy of Andurien. The Dutchy allied itself almost immediately with the Magistracy of Canopus, and formed apparently closer ties to the Taurian Concordat and Aurigan Coalition.

The situation in the Lyran Commonwealth was stabler, though there appeared to be a situation brewing in the border area between the Commonwealth and the Combine.

Expansion and Suggestions:

With the expansion of the Deep Space Signal Intelligence Network, it seems to be a good idea to set up a base station in the area between the Circinus Confederation, the Illyrian Palatinate and the Lothian League. There are a few uninhabited systems where an asteroid can be turned into a base for longer ranged operations, especially into the Marian Hegemony.

Random Event: Nothing much happens

Comstar Contact

During the conversation between WCDC and the Comstar personnel allowed to shed some light onto how the Black Warriors and Comstar had learned about the WCDC. Several years earlier a trader had visited a system close to the WCDC and somehow gotten his hands on the coordinates of the WCDC worlds in relation to that world. This in turn had been used by 'pirates', which were actually known to the diplomats to be national Circinus military, to attack. The results of this 'pirate raid' were kep quiet by the diplomats.

The Veseld noted some HGP radio backscatter in the following days, a lengthy conversation between Comstar HQ and the Endeavour about trying to make a visit to one or more WCDC worlds to assess the potential of either the cooperation or danger of the WCDC. The diplomats were informed about this traffic and the Veshat was dispatched to Bety Hydrii to confer with the Diplomatic Corps.

Other reports to Comstar HQ were about the closer contact to the Tiaunt on the small craft and a certain 'disturbing thought' the crew of the James Cook seemed to hold to these non-human intelligences.

Returning after three weeks, the Veshat delivered the message that the Endeavour was to make its way to Sol, where they would be asked to move to the Zenit Jump Point and the James Cook would be allowed to approach Ceres, where the Federal Districts would host a closer contact. Ceres had been selected due to its nature as a minor planet based nation and the more contained habitats with a more open full surveilance*.

In HPG traffic, a lower limit of the FTL speeds reached by an HF Space travel is noted, as well as a continuous report stream on the events. The offer to get to Sol and be hosted on Ceres is taken positively, even though they are informed abut the minor planet status of Ceres.

In late Winter the Endeavour arrives at the Sol Zenit Jump Point, welcomed by two Jump Point Defense stations and a squadron of Im-umi class craft, a fact reported back by HPG. It seemed that the conventional unmanned weapon platforms were unnoticed by the crew and sensors of the Endeavour. A while later the James Cook moved to Ceres, escorted by several Sleipnirs.

Another HPG report read about the volume of inter system traffic and numerous 'glowing balls' slowly moving through the system, puzzling the Comstar explorers. On the question, they were informed about the Mini Magnetosphere propulsion systems used all over Sol for non-time critical traffic.

* Smart Dust means that privacy in the WCDC is more of a convention, than an actual fact. Everyone knows that Smart Dust can easily be used for surveillance, but over the past 150 years the views on that have changed. Especially in asteroid habitats, Smart Dust is openly used for taking stock of the environment and inform about dangerous incidents like micro meteorite punctures of other air leaks.

Event Chain:

He stared at the flames in front of him, trying to free his mind, once again thinking about the vision he had more than three years ago. He had not been the only one, many others of his Clan had seen the same vision, the same vision and through some dark chatternet channels, he had heard that some from other Clans had the vision as well.

He tossed one of the vineer into the fire and almost immediately his surroundings changed.

He wasn't sitting on his knees in front of the fire anymore, instead he sat in a comfortable padded chair, staring at a huge window overlooking what could only be a bustling metropolis of some sort, even if it visibly curved up to the sides. He didn't think of that. Visions seldom were fully realistic.

Music seemed to play in the background, something with a steady beat and electronic tones.

As he glanced around the room appeared to be a study, the walls were covered with shelves, each holding books from floor to ceiling. Turning back to the window, he realized someone was standing in front of it, gazing outside. He quickly corrected himself, not someone, something. About a meter tall, shaped like some sort of bird, covered in blue feathers with wicked looking claws at its feet.

It turned around, the teeth in its maws gleaming in the light as it stared at him with brown eyes, seeming to grin.

"What do you want?" the creature asked and strode up to him. "What is it that you want for yourself? For your people?"

Its eyes seemed to pierce him as the question stood in the room. He didn't try to answer. If this was any way like that other vision, he could not answer anyway.

"Oh, and by the way," the creature said with something of a chuckle. "You can actually answer me. I'm not so much a fan of that mystical pish posh of my friend. I prefer an honest discussion..."

The creature snorted.

"I am more of a god of free will and expression after all..."

He blinked and tried to speak.

"I..." he said and his mouth closed again. He actually could react to this creature.

"Yes?", the creature replied, seeming somehow amused.

He thought back to the first vision. He had tried to come to a conclusion of what the other creature had asked him about who he was. A Protector or a Conquerer. With a start, he realized he had made that decision long ago, almost immediately after that first vision.

"I... I want to protect," he finally said. "I want to my Clan to protect and be protected."

The creature kept staring at him and shook its head, before turning back to the window.

"I hope you realize your society isn't supposed to protect anything," it said.

He wanted to experience outrange at what it said, but he could not find himself able to do so. He had read through the masses of old documents he had available to better advise his Kahn and do his other duties.

"It was created by a madman who stole from the Mongols, communist China and the Japanese, attempting to create some ideal warrior society," the creature continued. "I do have to grant him, it is somewhat stable and successful, but it makes for lousy protectors in my opinion. Conquerors, sure, but Protectors?"

Again, he wanted to be outranged, but something kept him back.

The creature turned back at him, gazing for a few long moments. Then it strode over to one of the walls with shelves, pulling out several large format books. It then walked back to him and let them fall into his lap.

"You know what, as a god of free will and expression, I will let you come to your own conclusion. I believe Plato, Kant and Nietzsche will help you out a bit. Let's call it homework."

The creature grinned at him again.

"Now, if you would please excuse me?" it continued. "I have to get to the Atomic Rocket."

The grin got wider.

"For today, God is a DJ."

He stared uncomprehendingly at the creature, and then at the fire in front of him.

He blinked a few times and then shook his head. What a strange vision. As he moved to stand back up, his feet brushed against a small stack of books. He stared at them and their spines.

Turn 23 - Spring 2180/3030

WCDC Defense Council:

[] Combat Evolved: active (2 turns)
With Battlemechs having gotten a crucial inspection and watches during training and maneuvers, the 'Tankers' remained on top of the few 'Mech Heads'. While Battlemechs are impressive weapon system carriers, they remain intricate machines that needs significant maintenance and repairs, even after simple overland trecks. While there are one or two specialized roles where a Battlemech can support conventional Combined Arms doctrine, they should not be considered a replacement for tanks and other weapon system carriers.
Time: 3 turns, Chance of success: 70%, Reward: Tank technology development action, Battlemech development action for specialized Battlemech, +5 on conventional ground vehicle development, Combined arms remain main doctrine
If this is selected It's a Gundam! Is unavailable. If Unsuccessful, It's a Gundam! gets a 10% higher chance of success during the subsequent action.

[] It's a Gundam!:
With Battlemechs having gotten a crucial inspection and watches during training and maneuvers, the 'Mech Heads' among the observers have gushed with praise for the effectiveness of Battlemechs and started to get more and more observers to their side. Combined with the fact that everyone is the Inner Sphere has used Battlemechs for centuries and found no better combat vehicle, it is only natural that the WCDC should adopt Battlemechs and develope their own to adopt this new weapon to replace the now outdated Combined Arms doctrine.
Time: 3 turns, Chance of success: 50%, Reward: Battlemech technology development action, +5 on Battlemech development, Battlemechs become the primary replacement for combined arms
If this is selected Combat Evolved is unavailable. If Unsuccessful, Combat Evolved gets a 10% higher chance of success during the subsequent action.

[] Offensive Defense Planning:
Interrogation of the Black Warrior prisoners taken in 61 Virginis have allowed the Survey Office and the Military Intelligence wing to gather some information about the Circinus Federation, in addition to the initial signal intelligence. True, they are currently unlikely to send more Jump Ships after their now failed attack, as they are preoccupied with a growing conflict in the Inner Sphere, but there are voices that call for a retaliatory attack on the Circinus Federation to make them and others think twice about attacking the Walker Cluster again. Either way Plans should be drawn up.
Time: 5 turns, Chance of success: 50%, Reward: Plans for an offensive operation against the Circinus Federation, in space and on the ground

[] Fast Space Combat Strategies:
With the new advanced spacecraft in the making, and the suggestion to integrate AutoWars into new squadrons to improve their combat effectiveness, it is time to think about new strategies making use of the new capabilities.
Time: 3 turns, Chance of success: 65%, Reward: +5 on space combat by way of new strategies

WCDC Survey Office:

[] Further Survey III: active (2 turns)
Following the Initial Survey, more information should be gathered further outside of the Walker Cluster and the already known space.
Time: 4 turns, Chance of success: 65%, Reward: (10+2d20) systems from 60 to 90 ly discovered, followup action allows surveying the remaining space

[] Rimworlds Research: active (3 turns)
From the information already gathered, there appears a now defunct polity to the core-spinwards of the position of the Walker Cluster, the Rimworlds Republic. It has apparently been destroyed in the massive war that destroyed the Star League, following a coup. Considering the massive use of warships and ground forces in the area, it might be possible to find one or two battlefields and potentially recover technology from any dropship or warship wreck.
Time: 6 turns, Chance of success: 45%, Reward: Discovery of an remote Battlefield, 1d6 jump ships and 1d4 derelict warships, 30% chance of one recoverable jump ship, 15% chance of one recoverable warship

[] Abandoned Settlements:
The initial Survey has discovered several previously habitated worlds where the initial settlers seem to have died out of left for greener pastures. Maybe it would be a good idea to take a closer look at these worlds and seek for anything the early habitants might have left behind. Maybe it would also be possible to resettle these worlds, if the ecology allows it.
Time: 3 turns, Chance of Success: 60%, Reward: Discovery of 1d10 valuable artifacts, 1d4 of these worlds can be resettled

[] Deep Cover Intelligence:
With the Preparations successful, it is time to send the Deep Cover Intelligence mission out into the Inner Sphere and begin trading with the Lyran Commonwealth and the Free Worlds League. And while doing so, gather information about the economy and military of the two Inner Sphere nations. It might also be possible to place some deep cover agents into both nations to gather long term information.
Time: 10 turns, Chance of Success: 60%, Reward: Information about the Lyran Commonwealth and the Free Worlds League, 75% chance of emplacing an intelligence network

Deep Space Signal Intelligence Network

[] Build an Forward Operation Base
Time: 3 turns, Chance of Success: 50%, Reward: Forward Operation Base, allowing shorter times reaction to any important news

WCDC Diplomatic Corps:

[] Long Range Diplomacy - Lothian League: active (5 turns)
It took a few months, but there is the idea it would be time to contact at least with the Lothian League, the closest of the small star nations of the Inner Sphere. It had also been the target of Köhler Military Services and as such, there is a bit of information on the nation available. The recent raids of the Marian Hegemony might allow us to make some offers of support towards the League.
Time: 6 turns, Chance of success: 50%, Reward: Diplomatic Contact with the Lothian League

[] Invite Others III:
The WCDC was working out nicely and maybe it was time to invite one of the other worlds outside the Three Systems into the WCDC?
Time: 4 turns, Chance of success: 35%, Reward: The selected world joins the WCDC as a member
Please select a world from the list of Known Habited Worlds neat the Walker Cluster

[] Charm Offensive III:
In the wake of the Black Warrior Attack and the fears that are still around in the nearby systems, it would be a good idea to alley their fear.
Time: 4 turns, Chance of success: 60%, Reward: Better diplomatic relations to the ten known worlds, +5 to diplomatic actions with the ten worlds

[] We need new members:
There are 14 nations in the Three Systems that have declined to become members of the WCDC. The Three Systems can't effort to have some nations working on cross purposes and endanger the entire rest of the Walker Cluster. So there is a need to get them aboard and into the WCDC.
Time: 2 turns, Chance of success: 25%, Reward: 1d6 nations of the 14 nations that declined WCDC membership initially, become WCDC members

[] Humanitarian Aid III:
With the formation of the Prometheus Foundation, it would be a shame not to make use of it. As such, it might be advantageous to send out a diplomatic mission to one of the neighboring systems discovered recently, and offer the planet some humanitarian aid. Rumors within the Foundation note they have been able to produce a couple of Planetary Settlement Kits, usually meant to establish new settlements on habitable worlds.
Time: 3 turns, Chance of success: 50%, Reward: +10 on diplomatic action on targeted world, targeted world is slowly brought up to a Walker Cluster tech level
Please select a world from the list of Known Habited Worlds neat the Walker Cluster

[] Long Range Diplomacy - Illyrian Palatinate:
In the wake of the raids of the Marian Hegemony on thge Palatinate, it might be preferrable to open diplomatic contact to the nation and potentially offer some support.
Time: 6 turns, Chance of success: 50%, Reward: Diplomatic Contact with the Illyrian Palatinate

[] Long Range Diplomacy - Comstar:
The arrival of the Comstar Explorer Corps jumpship Endeavour at Craigh has come to something of a surprise to the Diplomatic Corp. Some of the information exhcnaged through HPG by the jumpship is concerning and positive contact should be opened up with this telecommunication company.
Time: 4 turns, Chance of success: 50%, Reward: Diplomatic Contact with Comstar

WCDC Trade Organization:

[] Medium Combat Space Craft: active (3 turns)
With the end of the Future Space Combat Craft Project and the overwhealming success of the Light Combat Space Craft Project, the Defense Council, is of the opinion that a medium space combat craft is now needed, to replace the Guard Type of spacecraft and to support the lighter spacecraft in combat, as well as stand guard in orbit over planets to be defended. Unlike the two light craft, the medium craft do not have the need to land on a planetary surface.
Time: 6 turns, Chance of success: 60%, Reward: One design of a medium combat spacecraft, 20% chance of a working prototype

[] New Settlement Initiative: active (4 turns)
The recent attack of the Black Warriors on 61 Virginis has brought the vulnerability of the Three Systems and the WCDC into focus, even if the forces in the system have been able to defeat the invaders. There are also many virgin, uninhabited planets nearby discovered by the initial survey missions. So it is only natural that the Trade Organization should offer a few incentives to send out a few new settlement missions. Perhaps one or two Planetary Settelment Kits for free would do for settling an additional planet or two.
Time: 6 turns, Chance of success: 50%, Reward: 1d4 newly settled planets

[] Von Neuman:
AIs of various stripes have been a fact of life for all nations of the Three Systems for some time now and there had always been ideas of space craft that could reproduce by themselves and to a degree the Planetary Settlement Kits were a version of such a Von Neumann machine. Now, with both the economic and military situation somewhat in the balance, concerning the Inner Sphere, maybe it would be time to make use of the available technology and create fully automated factory space craft that could go into a system, begin mining raw materials from asteroids and then produce just about everything with its fabricators, from shoes over shuttles to combat space craft and even a copy of itself. The military would be interested in such a spacecraft to produce munitions, replacement parts and entire stations.
Time: 6 turns, Chance of success: 40%, Reward: Design of a Von Neumann Factory Spacecraft, 5% chance of a working prototype

WCDC Office for Science and Development:

[] Hypercom II: active (2 turns)
With Kearney-Fuchida slowly percolating through the scientific community, some physicists have locked on the information that the theory can be used for FTL communication. Not knowing all that much about the method of communication, some of these researchers nonetheless thing it should be possible to develop an FTL communication system out of the currently knowledge of Kearney-Fuchida theory.
Time: 4 turns, Chance of success: 70%, Reward: FTL communication system, 37.5% for Black Box, 37.5% for Hyper Pulse Generator, 25% for third option

[] KF Jump Core Research: active (2 turns)
The recent Attack on 61 Virginis has left the WCDC with easy access to three intact and the wreckage of one more jump ships. This in turn allows for the scientists to get their hands on actual KF jump cores. And that access means it should be possible to research these jump cores and discover how exactly they work and if the WCDC can copy them. And, so the vague hope of the researchers, possible, potentially improved upon.
Time: 4 turns, Chance of success: 70%, Reward: KF jump core technology, 40% chance of an improved KF jump core

[] Superliminal Wave Detector:
The new N Field Theory tells about the possibility of a form of n-dimensional waves that move at faster than light speeds for a certain distance. It should be possible to build some sort of detector for such waves. Already there are some possible uses for such a detector, such as detecting the use of jump drives over a certain distance. Though how long the distance will be is to be determined. Certainly, it would help detecting the emergance of jump drives inside a solar system and react faster for defensive purposes.
Time: 5 turns, Chance of success: 55%, Reward: Superluminal wave detector, (10+3d20)ly detection range

[] Project Blue Danube:
The recent Attack on 61 Virginis has left the WCDC with easy access to three intact and the wreckage of one more jump ships. This allows to do some tests floating about within the minds of various researchers ever since they learned about KF theory. What would happen if a jump ship was to carry a Heim-Feynman Event Generator? Either if carried by a dropship like craft or by the jump ship itself. Project Blue Danube would take one of the Invader class jumpships available for the current moment, model its magnetic characteristics and then equip it with a Heim-Feynman Event Generator. Then an automated system would do the experiments.
Time: 4 turns, Chance of success: 55%, Reward: In the future jumpships may be equipped with a HFEG based secondary FTL drive

[] Research Center Sol:
With the headquarters of the Office for Science and Development in Paris, more and more research seems to have flown into Sol on a somewhat natural basis. So there are now voices to set up a large reseach center somewhere in Sol, much like the venerable CERN on Earth. Several nations around Sol, especially in the asteroid belt have shown interest in providing space for such a research center.
Time: 4 turns, Chance of success: 70%, Reward: Research center in the Asteroid Belt (Roll to determine where), +10 on research

A self proclaimed God suggesting Clanners read God Is Dead Nietzsche

The God Of Trolls more like.

Too bad we did not get to see the ComStar boys having kitten fits.

Anyway

[x] Fast Space Combat Strategies:
With the new advanced spacecraft in the making, and the suggestion to integrate AutoWars into new squadrons to improve their combat effectiveness, it is time to think about new strategies making use of the new capabilities.
Time: 3 turns, Chance of success: 65%, Reward: +5 on space combat by way of new strategies

[x] Long Range Diplomacy - Comstar:
The arrival of the Comstar Explorer Corps jumpship Endeavour at Craigh has come to something of a surprise to the Diplomatic Corp. Some of the information exhcnaged through HPG by the jumpship is concerning and positive contact should be opened up with this telecommunication company.
Time: 4 turns, Chance of success: 50%, Reward: Diplomatic Contact with Comstar

Comstar is already here. Ignoring them is ill advised.

@Warringer, I want to see Myndo's and the First Circuit's reaction. Can you make a reaction post? It would be hilarious to read!
Problem is that I don't think that I can write them...

What about the Deep Space Network? ;)

[] Build an Forward Operation Base
Time: 3 turns, Chance of Success: 50%, Reward: Forward Operation Base, allowing shorter times reaction to any important news

[] Long Range Diplomacy - Comstar:

We need to get a handle on comstar now or they will be a major thorn causing endless trouble. Also if there was ever a time the dissident nations could/would fuck us it is now. Use this contact to get them to at least talk because we don't need them making backdoor deals letting the blakist in or passing tech and information. Forward ops because we need to keep trouble off our lawn and preferable in the enemies. That and if things do go bad with comstar we want max intercept time.

Really would want to see these next though as pretty critical need to start soonest projects. Also looking through things is there a reason IS weapon systems have not been looked at specifically yet? Like studying to see what can be learned from their weapons and being able to copy them? Lasers and ppc's should teach something and being able to make and export them could be a useful revenue sources. Got idea of export grade tanks and aerospace fighters, something we also need to think about ourselves, to surrounding powers. The Lothians's and Illyrians would probable greatly appreciate gifted or low cost high usefulness weapons to fight the Marians and this does not put our people or production tech in danger until we are ready to bring them into the fold if ever.

Even if we dont use manned fighters wonder what AI could do with drones?

You can be sure that if they want any tech or other information, they can just go on the Internet.

For one, there haven't been all that many examples of IS weaponry to go around and study in depth. Though with the nechs and dropships from the Black Warriors there are now some examples available.

As for aerospace fighters. Those are glass cannons for anyone in the WCDC militaries and not really meant to go far deyond the atmosphere and 'merely' intercept satellites, reentry vehicles and stations.

Tanks are likely to be exported as is. The new Helical Railguns certainly are on par with Gauss Rifles. ;)
Even if we dont use manned fighters wonder what AI could do with drones?
Way ahead of you. Combat Drones are a pretty common sites and carried by various spacecraft.
Technologies of the Solar Union said:
Compared to Missiles Drones are usually larger and equipped with individual weapons systems, like lasers or kinetic energy weapons. Some might be armed with Class 1 missiles. They are also equipped with combat ALIs as a guidance package and more sophisticated sensory systems. While with a generally lower maximum acceleration, Drones are still usually the first active combatants in kinetic or laser range of an opponent and can heavily damage a spacecraft.
While they are expected to be lost during an engagement, surviving drones can be recovered, rearmed and refueled, before they are returned into their magazines.

Anyway, @Blade4.

What about your vote? Because I see you making 2 diplomacy votes, but no military one.

You can be sure that if they want any tech or other information, they can just go on the Internet.
Context misunderstanding? Yes they can get a lot of the internet but latest gen stuff, and last gen stuff to a degree, should be hidden secrets. Saying they can get all our tech off the internet is saying like Afghanistan can learn how to make a latest mark Abrams tank armor, weapons, and electronics all by a wiki sweep.

Indeed but we do have samples and research into them should be a thing. These are the common weapons of most all the rest of the known universe. Understanding them should be a key research project.

Interesting still they are a key part of IS warfare so when we get a chance we should at least look at them. If nothing else might give us insights to improve drones and maybe we could make a cheap design to also export. The market exists so why not exploit it?

On par yes but most all we would export them to cannot make them or maintain them and the railgun should be a military secret for now anyway. We should not be exporting our best stuff to people we may be fighting in the next few decades or could lose it to such and we should tailor it for markets needs and capacity. What's more useful and sensible to the Lothians and Illryians a gun they need outside help to maintain and beholds them to that power or a autocannon they can maintain or build themselves if needed?

Handing out industrial gear and fabricators should be a sealing the deal thing for those we are bring into the fold. We do not need them falling into House or Marian hands who will happily use them to try and build up a massive military force to go a conquering with.

Awesome.

Oh? Oops thought setting up base was military. Fast Space Combat Strategies serves well enough but perhaps down the line we make use of the merc's we have for training? Pay them to let our guys train up in their mechs for experience in using them. Even if we do not use mechs much having a cadre is still useful if only for Opposition Force trainers.

True enough, but they are likely to get the general data on the efficiency and things like that. When they know where to look anyway. They are likely to stumble of cat pictures and pron first... ;)

Ahhh New Economic Actions... How I missed you...

I'm pretty sure that they dont actually have the means to build their own stuff, rather than importing it from the Inner Sphere... Like everyone else... >_>

They are pretty much already dependent on outside help...

Tell that to the Prometheus Foundation, who is handing out Fabricators for humanitarian reasons. Just look at Hannover and Pandemonium, but got Fabricators early on any only Hannover is a WCDC member.

No, the base is for the Deep Space Signal Intelligenve Network. As for the mercs, they are mostly constantly training up the Armies and help with developing ground tactics.

Good. Just because a lot of our tech will get out eventually does not mean we should shrug it off. Intelligence agencies are there for a reason. Make our neighbors work for it.

Ahhh New Economic Actions... How I missed you...
There are so many things we could sell. Weapons are obvious but water filters and fusion engines are even more hot ticket items. Spare tractor parts would get tears in eyes on many worlds. Selling a basic industry kit and a few trainers would get you most anything.

If they can field a tank they have to have some industry because no amount of Ragnarok proofing will keep it working after a few years of general use much less a few fights. It might be craftsmen with apprentices handcrafting part but it has to be there but then we can also sell them basic industry kits that could be used for such among other things.

Autocannons first though. If they can barely maintain tanks they won't be able to keep rail guns up reliable and both us and them want reliable gear. We can sell or hand out refit kits once they can handle the more high tech gear.

As long as the bleeding hearts are made to understand responsibility. It is all well and good to help people but don't be stupid. Beyond the cluster most everything is post apocalyptic hell and slowly recovering when not dragging themselves up for another round of senseless fighting. At least one of our close neighbors are jumped up pirates who will happily use the gear to enrich themselves and enslave worlds around them. The absurdly vast houses nearby just finished round four of fighting over a 300 year old dead throne.

Do not let compassion become seed for greater suffering.

Ah well then never mind we probably have that cadre or benefits from it already.

It's a shame we can't get their head mechanic. Anyway we could tempt her away or is she just completely disillusioned with academic work?

Heh.

That is part of the reason why there are planetary settlement kits. The open source technology in them is pretty basic, but helps a planetary economy to get started.

It get a good Diplomatic bonus, helps get worlds around the WCDC get a bit better defense up on their own and the founder of the Prometheus Foundation, Adam Prometheus, is a god (retired), who knows a few things others do not.

She is pretty much disillusioned. Even with that of Earth, after Dick Feynman made his joke...

Hopefully that retired god talks to some people about need to know stuff... That and I am guessing who ever is talking to the clans trying to get them to see reasons also who ever did the transfer of the cluster. No idea what long term goal is beyond his amusement.

Geez what kind of shit has that woman been through where one stupid joke turns her off forever? Probably well past point making him apologizing on his knees would do any good either I guess. Frustrating a trained scientist we really could use is right there but...

Actually can we pay her to just write? Pen out some papers or buy off text books she might have. No other scientists or meetings just a cool million or three to write out useful stuff?

That or send in a honey pot to sweep her off her feet and marry her...

Well... There is some guy sitting in front of a computer... ;)

When in doubt, blame Comstar.
That or send in a honey pot to sweep her off her feet and marry her...
I don't think her wife would be thrilled.

Uh well seduce her to. Or at least ask her if there is a way to make amends. And in this era 90% of problems comstar is probably involved somehow. Why need to diplomance them hard so they don't start causing lots of problems. Probably will either way but if we don't look like a threat to "Blake's Vision" less chance they will go try hard on being a inconvenience and trying to turn people against us.

Why? Her expertise is not needed anymore. The WCDC got a more advanced theory that includes both KF and HF theories and allows to model just about anything n dimensional involving either theory.

Though both theories are still useful for everyday work. Like Newton is still useful in the days of Einstein.

She supposed to be professor in a field they are still exploring. Figured she might still have stuff to learn from but if she was only good for theory they have mostly mastered already...

Doctor, not professor. And she left the field about a year after picking up her doctorate.

Uh oh well then. That's actually kinda sad and a waste. Get the doctorate then just walk away? Guess happier playing with mech parts.

Actually is the unit trying to expanded? They been here long enough they should be doing pretty well and could be picking up adventures recruits which means more machines unless want to add lots of infantry. Could pick up tanks or try to buy salvaged black warrior stuff I guess.

Personally would rather see them eventually used as core of the first mech regiment or at least people trained by them as. Going to need them either way eventually and not having them will just make idiots or uninformed think we are weak.

Edit: anyone else want to chime in here to?
