American Electoral Reform

Wouldn't want to commit our politicians to a global justice system obviously
Problem is, that'll feed the conspiracy nuts and xenophobes and Nativists and we can't have that happen... as a lot of them have more crazy/ideology than sense.

We'll have to keep it internal until we can eliminate those groups from power.

Conspiracy nuts obviously excluding yourself of course.

Anyway international solidarityis the only true way to justice otherwise you're just a liberal who wants political reform at home but is fine with colonies and Wars for profit.

True way and Justice in the same sentence. Interesting. I suppose you have an objective, demonstratable, perception of justice, hmm?

House Democrats' big democracy reform package is good policy, and smart politics
House Democrats have decided on their priority legislation for the next Congress, and it's all about improving the quality of American democracy. HR 1, the bill number typically reserved for the House majority party's most important policy, marks the first time that political reform has been given this kind of top billing.

There's a lot in the bill, including a number of ethics and disclosure and election security proposals that should be commonsense. But at heart, there are four big-ticket items that would be standalone news on their own: a small-donor matching system for campaign finance, mandatory independent redistricting commissions, automatic voter registration, and felon reenfranchisement. Collectively, this is the most transformative pro-democracy package in decades.
The Democratic Party plans on sending a huge electoral reform bill. According to Vox, the big items are a small-donor matching system for campaign finance, mandatory independent redistricting commissions, automatic voter registration, and felon reenfranchisement.

Besides providing protection against discrimination for the LGBTQ community during employment, electoral reform would probably be one of the easier policies to pass for the Democrats if they ever retake the government.

The Democrats can pass whatever if they take the government, unless of course you suspect Blue Dogs are going to be a 5th column against the Green New Deal.

and felon enfranchisement.
What sort of felon enfranchisement? Because if it is blanket, then we'll go back to pre-'fellony equals removal of voting rights' era of US politics and that wasn't good for a democracy.

Agreed, I too fear democracy being democratic
The old political machines used their pardoning power to utilize felons as street muscle to force anyone that would vote for anyone else into compliance. The Progressives didn't trust anyone with the ability so they curtailed to so hard that it was de-facto impossible to do this ever again. People forgot why felons were locked out of their voting rights for a period, and it doesn't bode well.

you're right, black dudes being stripped of their rights stopped voter intimidation from being a thing, I've just forgotten this due to all the ACTIVE MEASURES infiltrating my brain

Problem, I don't trust any party with felon enfranchisement given the prior history of it's use. Better not allow it than have it available for misuse.

Wouldn't the solution to just be ban disenfranchisement for ANY reason? You can't give it back in exchange for something if it was never taken. The history of it is tied in with keeping blacks from voting via false convictions anyway. It's something that needs to be tossed out with the other leftover jim crow nonsense, just like prison labor.

Cuomo's Call for an Election Day Holiday Surprises Even Voting Reform Advocates
If they didn't know already, the breakdowns on Election Day reminded voters that New York has some of the most antiquated voting laws and processes in the country. From a lack of early voting to the fact that voters must declare a party affiliation more than six months before a primary, New York can make voting hard.

"On this issue, we're way far behind. New York is one of only 13 states that doesn't have early voting," said Susan Lerner, the executive director of advocacy group Common Cause New York. "Texas adopted early voting in 1996. So it's embarrassing."
Gov. Andrew Cuomo plans on improving New York's democracy in 2019. The reforms being voting by mail, early voting, same-day registration, automatic voter registration, consolidating federal and state primaries, and establish Election Day as a holiday in the state.

No, it wouldn't. That provides a perverse incentive to back politicians who would turn their felonies into non-felonies or eliminate them as crimes altogether. Given that if you give humans an inch, they tend to give several blood-soaked miles...

Except that doesn't happen in the rest of the civilized world where disenfranchisement is not automatic, and in some places doesn't exist at all with no negative effects. Tell, me how Blood Soaked is Canada at the moment. They don't take voting rights from anyone. How about Norway? Denmark? Finland? Sweden? Germany? Well, there is France....

Unlike most of those places, the US has a history with it's criminal element using any holes in the law to their advantage and has a deep history of it's own citizenry helping said criminal element. The only non-US nation that is Anglo or European that has a similar history is the Ausies...

The criminals abusing the law? How exceptionally US! Lol. Don't use the exceptionalism excuse to cover your own societal failings.

How about Italy? Only murderers lose it there. Ireland? Noone loses the vote there either. Taiwan? Only lost if in for life or getting death. How about Israel? No disenfranchisement of convicts there either.

Don't bother, it's the good old title from The Onion: "There's nothing that can be done", says only developped nation where it happens regularly.

The thing with the US is that the citizenry have -more often than not- equated criminals with Robin Hood than actual criminals. Australia is probably the only other nation in the Anglo-sphere that has a similar problem. Not only that but the US's history is also rife with politicians using criminals as enforcers like the bloody mob...

How long have they been in place?

Oh, wow, seeing criminals as romantic, how original! Using criminals as enforcers, noone in continental Europe did that? Oh, wait, our modern police was built by a fucking crime lord, Vidocq.

Stop believing yourself special. You fuck up, own it.

In Israel, for it's entire history. Ireland since rhe founding of rhe republic, Italy since it was put back together after Benito, with a note that as of 2015 felons can't run for office.

And all three of those have a history of romanticizing criminals and thugs. Mafia, Irgun, IRA, etc...

The US is not special, the US is just wrong. Just like everything else about it's justice system.
