47 Malaysians believed duped by recruitment agency now detained in Cambodia

KUCHING: They were promised high-paying jobs in Cambodia, but instead were duped by a "recruitment agency" which was a front for a human trafficking syndicate and are now languishing in jail several hundred kilometres from Phnom Penh.

The Malaysians, including nine women, were detained on Dec 11 in Poipet, Banteay Mancheay, on the outskirts of the Cambodian capital, for allegedly being members of an international online gaming syndicate.

However, when the Malaysian embassy in Cambodia investigated, they found that the Malaysians, aged between 19 and 44, and mostly from Sabah and Sarawak, had been waiting for legitimate jobs while in Cambodia.

One reason not to believe any recruitment centers about 'high-paying jobs' in foreign countries. Goddamnit all.

I mean...I wouldn't think that Cambodia had better job opportunities than Malaysia, just off the top of my head. And I'm on the other side of the world.

And a quick look suggests that, yes, Malaysians are making, on average, 7x what Cambodians are.

"Lets go to Cambodia!" had to come from a woeful mix of desperate and uninformed.

Oh, it does. One one side (the Malaysians) the claim is the recruitmwnt agency promised jobs with salaries up to $1,500 (RM 6,100) which already sounds too good. Then they were taken to Cambodia and stuffed in a house for a a week without anything to do.

With the Cambodians the story was here was a bunch of people stuck in the house who never came out at day in a town infamous for its online casinos. Police made a raid and boom, illegal online gambling.
